Reviews of the Best Virginia Online Poker Sites

To expand on the list of the best Virginia poker sites above, we’ve created more in-depth reviews about each of the brands. This includes information on the type of games you can play, payment options, customer support, and software info.

1) BetOnline – No.1 Virginia Online Poker Site with 22 Years Experience

BetOnline information:

  • Website: BetOnline
  • Payout time: 1-2 business days
  • Established: 2004
  • License: Panama
  • Headquarters: Panama

Our Verdict: 4.8/5

BetOnline have been in the industry since 2004 and are ranked as our number one pick for online poker in Virginia. The poker room runs alongside a thriving casino and sportsbook and is hosted on the Chico Poker Network.

betonline online poker

You’re able to choose between three different platforms to play at BetOnline which includes instant online play, download version, and mobile poker site. The lobby runs quickly and it’s easy to navigate between different game variations and tables.

BetOnline poker gives you the chance to change your screen name each time you play at the tables. This means it’s essentially anonymous tables, which is good for recreational players. The table design is superb, and you can customize things such as converting chips to big blinds, running it multiple times and showing hand strength. You can also choose your own custom avatars and set bet slider amounts.

Poker Game Variations at BetOnline: 4.8/5

Games are mixed between Hold’em and Omaha variations. For cash games Hold’em includes heads up, 6 max, and full ring. You can also access Boost games, which is essentially speed poker played with pools of players. Table limits start from 5c/10c up to $15/$30.

Omaha cash games are a mix of limit, pot limit, and high/low. Games also start from 5c/10c and work up to $15/$30. Boost games include PL Omaha and NL Hold’em.

Other games you can access at BetOnline include tournaments (the biggest is the $150k Guaranteed Sunday major), Sit and Go’s, Windfall poker, and a huge range of satellites to get entry into the main events.

Payment Options: 4.5/5

BetOnline has a huge range of payment options available, with the majority of those being crypto-based. If you are using crypto then these include Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Apecoin, Dogecoin, and Shiba In. Deposits start from just $20, and withdrawals are processed within the hour.

Other banking methods include Visa, Mastercard, Person 2 Person, Money Order, Wire Transfer and Check by Courier.

Customer Support: 4.6/5

Customer support can be accessed with the live chat function on-site. You also get a toll-free phone number, email address, contact form, and massive FAQ/help section that will cover most issues.

Bonuses and Promos: 4.8/5

BetOnline has a range of welcome bonuses, so it’s nice to see that poker has a dedicated promotion as well. This offer is a 100% match up to $1,000 and can be claimed using the BetOnline promo code “INSIDERS”. To clear the bonus, you will release $5 for every $50 raked and have 30 days to do it. Qualifying deposits start from just $50.

BetOnline Online Poker Bonuses & Promos:

Bonus name Bonus amount Promo code Rollover Minimum deposit Bitcoin accepted?
Poker Sign-up Offer 100% up to $1,000 INSIDERS $5 for every $50 raked $50  ✅

2) Bovada – Up to $3000 Welcome Bonus Package and Low Wagering Bonuses

Poker site facts:

  • Website: Bovada
  • Payout time: 1-2 business days
  • Established: 2011
  • License: Curacao Gaming Commission
  • Headquarters: Costa Rica

Our Verdict: 4.7/5

Bovada, like BetOnline, has multiple ways you can access the poker room, with a download, instant play, and mobile format. The software is run on the Bodog network and while the network is small, it’s widely regarded as one of the weakest in the industry.

bovada online poker

The reason for this is that Bovada gets a huge number of recreational players that jump from the sportsbook and casino to dabble in poker. Games that run at 200 no limit generally play out as if they were 50 no limit or lower compared with other sites, such is the drop off in quality.

Some of the standout features that you can expect from Bovada include a lightning-fast interface, quick seat allocation, Zone Poker (speed poker), anonymous tables, hand percentage indicators, unique card designs, customizable setup, and rabbit cam, to name just a few.

Poker Game Variety at Bovada: 4.5/5

The poker room is split into four sections: cash games, Zone poker, sit and go, and tournaments. All games include Hold’em, Omaha, and Omaha hi/lo, with stakes starting from 2c/5c and ranging up to $10/$20 for cash games.

Tournament poker has a ton of freerolls and cheap satellites at the bottom end, with the bigger events commanding buys ins of $1,000 as part of their high roller series. As mentioned, the tournament field are some of the weakest that we’ve come across, so these are well worth checking out.

Payment Options: 4.9/5

Deposit options are excellent, with access to Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Deposits start from just $20 and have no fees attached – unlike BetOnline.

Withdrawals will need you to verify your account, but again, have no fees and crypto payments are processed within the hour.

Customer Support: 4.5/5

The help center is the first place you need to start as they cover a ton of information here. Failing that, you can email Bovada directly or you can chat with them online via the live chat function. Access to customer support is 24/7.

Bonuses and Promos: 4.9/5

The welcome bonus at Bovada allows you to claim a $500 bonus which is a 100% match of your first deposit of $20 or more. The bonus will last for 30 days, and you release $5 for every 150 Rewards Points earned. This basically works out to be $1 for every 15 reward points, so $5 for every $10 raked, which is very low for this type of promotion.

Bovada Online Poker Bonuses & Promos:

Bonus name Bonus amount Promo code Rollover Minimum deposit Bitcoin accepted?
Poker Sign-up Offer 100% up to $500 INSIDERS $5 for every $10 raked (150 Rewards Points) $20  ✅

3) Everygame – An Excellent Poker Room for Low-Stakes Players

Poker site facts:

  • Website: Everygame
  • Payout time: 48 hours
  • Established: 1996 (2011 as the current Everygame brand)
  • License:  Curacao Gaming Commission
  • Headquarters: Antigua and Barbuda

Our Verdict: 4.5/5

Everygame Poker is hosted on the Horizon Poker Network. Traffic is decent, but it’s a little lacking outside of peak times, especially when compared to BetOnline and Bovada. However, the games are generally very good, with the overall standard being low, especially for cash games.

everygame online poker

The poker room is well-designed and fully accessible on mobile devices. It’s got a download and instant play option online, and the tables provide a good range of features, such as design, deck color, anonymous tables, and rabbit cam.

One of the main attractions of Everygame Poker is the ability to claim Rakeback. This can be up to 36% and gets paid back to the player in cash. They also included a Rakeback calculator to see how much you can earn per hand contribution, which is a nice feature.

Poker Game Variety at Everygame: 4.4/5

Hold’em and Omaha are the only two game options in the poker room. You can play a wide range of levels, with cash games starting from as low as 2c/4c, running up to $15/$30. There are times when bigger games than this run, but that seems to be on an invite-only level, and not all that often.

Tournament access is good, and you get a freeroll token when you make a deposit of $25 or more into your poker account. The main games are at weekends and are commonly referred to as the “majors”. Some of the guaranteed prize pools will surpass $150,000, making them among the biggest in the industry.

Payment Options: 4.7/5

Deposit options include Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Cash to Code, Much Better, EcoPayz, Interac, Paysafe, and EU SEPA bank transfer. There are no fees involved for any of these deposit methods, with minimum transfections starting from just $20.

Withdrawal options include Bitcoin, Altcoins, Bank Wire, EcoPayz, and EU SEPA bank transfers. EcoPayz and SEPA start from just $20, with crypto from $100. Bank Wire will incur a fee of $50 per transaction.

Customer Support: 4.5/5

There are multiple support channels that include an email address (dedicated address for the poker room if needed) and a live chat function. You can also access the help/FAQ section that includes a vast wealth of knowledge regarding all this to do with your account.

Bonuses and Promos: 4.4/5

The poker welcome bonus at Everygame is a 200% deposit match worth up to $2,000. You need to clear the bonus by earning 83.335 Frequent Player Points to release $5 of bonus cash. You have three months to clear the bonus in full before it expires. You earn 1 FFP for every $1 raked, so it works out at $83.335 for every $5 of rake, considerably higher than the Bovada offers.

Everygame Online Poker Bonuses & Promos:

Bonus name Bonus amount Promo code Rollover Minimum deposit Bitcoin accepted?
Poker Sign-up Offer 200% up to $1,000 INSIDERS $5 for every $83.335 raked (83.555 FPP) $25  ✅

4) SportsBetting.ag – Fee Free Fast Payout with Bitcoin in 12-24 Hour

Poker site facts:

  • Website: SportsBetting.ag
  • Payout time: 24-48 hours
  • Established: 2011
  • License: Panama
  • Headquarters: Panama

Our Verdict: 4.5/5

SportsBetting.ag is located on the Chico Network and with it can boast a good amount of traffic at off-peak times. It’s the same network as BetOnline, so the games and features are very similar.

sportsbetting online poker VA

The poker room can be played as a download option (both Mac and PC) or as instant play. Given that a lot of the traffic comes from players jumping from sports and casinos, games are relatively soft at the lower levels. However, the higher-limit games get less traffic and it’s more common to come across regular players, who ideally you want to avoid.

The layout is very good, and the tables have a lot of customizable features. They include a lot of different tournaments that are exclusive to SportsBetting.ag, such as the Micro Tournament Series which is run multiple times throughout the year.

Poker Game Variety at SportsBetting.ag: 4.8/5

The range of poker games you can access is excellent. Hold’em and Omaha make up the bulk of the games and they are one of few that offer limit hold’em as well. Mixed games include 7-card stud, Americana, and 32 Card Draw.

Stakes start from 1c/2c, which is ideal for those totally new to the game. Maximum states are up to $5/$10 for most games, which is plenty for most, but not the highest we have seen.

Payment Options: 4.4/5

Crypto payments make up the bulk of the payment options at SportsBetting.ag. These include the likes of Bitcoin, Ape Coin, Avalanche, Litecoin, Ripple, and Shiba Inu. Deposits for most of these start from just $20.

More traditional payment options include Mastercard, American Express, Visa, and Wire Transfer. Limits for these are a little higher starting from $50 (Wire Transfer is $1,000). Withdrawing via crypto has no fees attached, but you will have to pay something for other methods, again starting from around $50 per transaction.

Customer Support: 4.4/5

You can contact customer support using the live chat function on the site or by using the toll-free phone number. Support is on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Bonuses and Promos: 4.4/5

The poker bonus at Sportsbetting.ag is worth up to $1,000. This offer is based on a 100% match of your first deposit and will be triggered on deposits of $50 or more. Every time you earn $50 in rake, you get $5 of your bonus. Use the Sportsbetting.ag poker promo code “INSIDERS” to trigger this offer.

Sportsbetting.ag Online Poker Bonuses & Promos:

Bonus name Bonus amount Promo code Rollover Minimum deposit Bitcoin accepted?
Poker Sign-up Offer 100% up to $1,000 INSIDERS $5 for every $50 raked $50  ✅

5) Ignition – Best in the US For Real Money Players

Poker site facts:

  • Website: Ignition
  • Payout time: Up to 48 hours
  • Established: 2002
  • License:  Curacao
  • Headquarters: Curacao

Our Verdict: 4.4/5

Ignition Poker is on the Bodog network, which as we’ve already stated, is one of the better networks to play on. The standard of play is relatively low and there are a few reasons for this.

ignition online poker

The first is the number of players that jump from sports and casinos into poker. Generally, they are casual players, with low skill thresholds. Second, games are anonymous, which means that you can’t track hands, which in turn discourages regular poker players.

Finally, you’re only allowed to play a maximum of four tables at any given time. Again, this discourages high-volume (usually higher-skilled) players which makes the games a lot more appealing.

Poker Game Variety at Everygame: 4.5/5

The game variety at Ignition is excellent, with a wide range of cash games, tournaments, and sit-and-go. Games start from just 2c/4c for cash games and as little as $1 for tournaments. These include hyper turbos, Omaha turbos, guaranteed prize pools, Double Up, Triple Up, and finally, jackpot sit-and-go games.

Payment Options: 4.4/5

Deposit options include Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Visa, American Express, and Zelle. You can deposit as little as $25 and payments are processed instantly. You can withdraw back to Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Wire Transfer, Check by Courier, and Voucher.

Customer Support: 4.4/5

Customer service options include live chat and an on-site contact form. You can get in touch 24/7 or you can use the massive help/FAQ section, which covers the majority of everyday queries that you might have.

Bonuses and Promos: 4.3/5

The poker bonus at Ignition is a 150% match worth up to $1,500 if you use crypto, or 100% up to $1,000 if you use a credit or debit card. To unlock the bonus, you need to earn 30 Ignition Miles for every $1 of the bonus.

Ignition Online Poker Bonuses & Promos:

Bonus name Bonus amount Promo code Rollover Minimum deposit Bitcoin accepted?
Poker Sign-up Offer Credit/Debit Card 100% up to $1,000 INSIDERS $1 for every 30 Points $20
Poker Sign-up Offer Crypto 150% up to $1,500 INSIDERS $1 for every 30 points $20

Is Online Poker Legal in Virginia?

The poker sites listed and reviewed above are completely legal to use in Virginia. They have offshore servers offshores, meaning VA residents can safely play on them against other players either within the state, or anywhere around the world, where brands such as BetOnline and Bovada are in operation.

Our recommendation for the safest Virginia online poker site is BetOnline. They’ve been around since 2004 and have some of the best games in the business. It comes with a wide range of payment options, tons of cash games, dedicated poker bonuses, and mobile access.

Outside of offshore sites, the only poker that you can play are home games that have no rake and games that are located at either bingo halls or charitable gaming venues.

Virginia Poker Laws

We’ve included a list of some of the Virginia poker laws that are currently in place. We want to stress that, while these laws cover most of the mainstream gambling within the state, it does not impact the accessibility of offshore poker sites as they do not need to adhere to these laws.

We’re also expectant that these laws will be set to change in the not-too-distant future, so we will keep these updated as and when this occurs.

Most of these laws come from section 18.2-325 of the Virginia Code linked to gambling:

  • General overview of illegal gambling – Virginia classes poker as part of its “illegal gambling” laws. However, this is linked to poker sites that are based in the state and do not include offshore poker sites as listed on this page.
  • Skill games – Poker is not seen as a Skill game by the state of Virginia. This is an interesting point as it was thrown out by the House when contested that poker was a skill game. Greg Raymer, WSOP winner, was unsuccessfully used to prove the point that it was a game of skill.
  • Home games – Games are allowed to be played for money if no rake is taken by the house.
  • Bingo/ Charitable Gaming Venues – Poker is allowed for real money.
  • Legal age – Charitable gaming is accessible for those aged 18 and over. However, sports and casinos have a minimum age of 21.

When Will Online Poker be Legal in Virginia?

The legal structure surrounding online poker in Virginia is complicated. The fact that you’re allowed to play at bingo halls but not in casinos makes no sense, according to many politicians, so something must give.

The positives are that the state does accept some forms of gambling, with online sports betting becoming legal in 2020 (this, like so much of legislation within the state, has still not fully gone through given the slow rate at which licenses have been commissioned).

We think that online poker will be legal within the next couple of years. Casino is almost certainly going to follow sports and when it does, that will give the green light for poker. The additional revenue that the state will make from both is going to be too much to pass on.

Tax on Online Poker Winnings in Virginia

The lack of access to online poker sites that are hosted within Virginia means that there are no laws on the tax that you pay. However, it’s almost certain that online poker will eventually fall into the general tax rates for gambling in Virginia, which are outlined below:

INCOME TAX RATE
$3,000 or less 2%
$3,001-$5,000 $60 plus 3% of the excess over $3,000
$5,001-$17,000 $120 plus 5% of the excess over $5,000
$17,0001 and higher $720 plus 5.75% of the excess over $17,000

It’s worth noting that any winnings made on offshore poker sites will not be taxable. These sites do not conform to US laws, and you do not need to declare these winnings on your tax reports.

Regulated Poker Sites vs Offshore Poker Sites

In this section, we’re going to look at what you can expect from regulated and offshore poker sites. Even though Virginia doesn’t have any regulated sites as of yet, it’s still worth looking at how they compare.

Regulated Sites

  • Licensing – All licenses are issued by the state of Virginia. This means that they need to adhere to rules and regulations within the state, which are often more restrictive than offshore sites.
  • Taxes – Taxes will be due on poker winnings. This will range from as little as 2% up to 5.75%. The scale is based on your income and will come with a surplus charge applied to each level.
  • Limited player pools – The number of players at the poker site will be limited as they will only be able to play against other players within the state. It’s likely going to take a long time for the online poker room to get established to drive any meaningful traffic.
  • Limited game types – Not all forms of online poker are accessible on regulated sites. These can be limited, especially for new online poker rooms.
  • Higher minimum age – Regulated sites generally only accept players that are 21 or over in the United States. This is the case even though the legal gambling age for poker in Virginia is 18.

Offshore Sites

  • More games to choose from – Offshore sites have been established for years and have big pools of players. This means that there are more games to choose from, especially when it comes to off-peak times.
  • Bigger bonuses – The lack of restrictions for offshore sites results in bigger welcome bonuses. You will usually get access to existing player promos as well.
  • Cross-network games – A lot of the offshore poker rooms run on the same network. This means that you are playing against more players with bigger prize pools.
  • No location restrictions – You’re able to access offshore poker rooms from anywhere in the United States. A lot of the poker rooms accept players and grant access to countries from around the world, meaning you can play while you travel as well.

Will Virginia be Ring-Fenced or Shared Player Pool?

Gambling laws in the US are now run on a state-by-state basis. As you know, not all states legally allow online poker, with Virginia being one of them.

However, this is likely to change in the (hopefully) not-too-distant future, which is why we need to look at if the state will be ring-fenced or not.

When we talk about ring-fencing this means that players in Virginia can only play against other players in the same state. Shared player pools will accept players from other states and even potentially other countries.

All the US states currently accept online poker ring fence players. This will almost certainly be the case in Virginia when online poker is legalized.

Types of Poker Games available at Virginia Poker Sites

In this section, we’ve included a look at the range of poker games you can access from Virginia online poker sites. The majority of poker rooms will offer variations of each of these and are regarded as the most popular.

Cash Games

Cash games can start from as little as 1c/2c and are great starting points for new players. As the stakes increase, generally so does the quality of players. Limits will range up to around $15/$30 for most sites, but they are more limited as you get higher. Tables come in heads up, 6 max, and full ring (9/10 players) for the most part.

Sit and Go’s

A sit-and-go is a single-table knockout. These games all have a set buy-in with a percentage of the pot going to the winner and subsequent finishing positions. As the game progresses, the blinds go up, with most lasting around 20-30 minutes. Table sizes include 6 max and full ring, with buy-ins starting from as little as $1.

Multi Table Tournaments

Tournaments are games that include more than two tables and can have hundreds of players. Each player pays a buy in and this is added to the prize pool. To win a multi-table tournament can take hours, but the payout in relation to buy-in can be huge.

Jackpot Games

Jackpot games have a bad beat jackpot that is attached. This is paid out based on the strength of the losing hand. As an example, BetOnline runs an offer where if you have four-of-a-kind deuces or better and that hand loses, you and the players at the table will get a share of the bad beat jackpot.

A typical breakdown of the jackpot would be 20% to the player with the bad beat, 15% to the hand winner, 12.5% shared amongst the other players at the table, 12.5% shared amongst players at other BBJ tables, 35% reseed and 5% fee.

Speed Poker

Speed poker tables are where you are entered into a pool of players and as soon as you fold your hand, you’re moved to another table instantly to play your next hand. You can rack up a huge number of hands in a short period of time in these games and they bring a totally different dynamic and strategy compared to standard cash games.

Straddle

Straddle games are where you essentially place an extra big blind, which in poker is referred to as the straddle. As a result, these games can play big, and you need deep pockets to keep up with increasing pot sizes.

Poker Site Bonuses Available for Virginia Players

Bonuses are accessible on all new accounts and most existing accounts for players in Virginia. We’re going to look at what type of bonuses you can claim and a little more about how they work.

Matched Deposit Bonuses

The most common promotion you can get is the matched deposit option. This is where the poker room will match the deposit you make in the form of a bonus that you then need to clear.

For example, at BetOnline, you get a 100% match worth up to $1,000. This means that for every dollar you deposit up to $1,000, they will give you a bonus of that amount. So, a $250 deposit will get a $250 bonus.

You then need to clear that bonus by playing for real money. In this example, it’s $5 for every $50 you rake.

No Deposit Bonuses

The no-deposit bonus is an offer where the poker room will grant you a bonus without the need to deposit. This will still come with wagering requirements attached and once applied to your account, you will treat this like a typical deposit bonus.

Free Roll Tickets

Tips for Playing Online Poker for Real Money in Virginia

We’ve listed some tips for playing online for real money in Virginia. Use these to become better at the game and essentially make more from our time playing.

  • Table selection – Online poker allows you to move from table to table quickly and easily to table. The best will avoid players of a high standard and target the weak (fish). Doing so it makes it easier to win more as the competition is lower.
  • Starting hand strategy – One of the easiest strategies to employ is a solid starting hand. This is where you’re selective about the range of hands that you play and the position you are playing from. A tighter strategy will mean that you play fewer marginal hands and therefore get in fewer tough situations about what to do post-flop.
  • Position – In an ideal world, we would act last in every hand. To do so means playing from the button (dealer). However, it’s not always possible to do this, but when we are out of position, we should be aware that we may have to act first and we want to be doing this with hands of strength.
  • Take a shot – The majority of online poker players are incredibly conservative when it comes to the stakes that they play. You need to be comfortable to move up and take shots at higher levels, not just to make more money, but to improve as you come up against better players.
  • Bankroll management – You need to practice good bankroll management. This means that your bankroll can cover the inevitable downswings. Bankrolls will be dependent on several factors, but a good place to start is 100 buy ins for the level that you want to play. For example, if you want to play 100NL then one buy in would be $100. Multiply that by 100 and you would need $10,000 to be comfortable.

Playing Online Poker vs Live Poker in Virginia

The best thing about poker in Virginia is that you’re able to access both online and live betting options. The games differ massively in terms of how they play out, which we’re going to look at in this section.

Online you get to access a huge range of promotions, something you will not get live. These can be worth thousands of dollars and are one of the main reasons why suggest playing online over live.

You also get access to a much wider range of games, with sites like BetOnline having dozens of tables spread across cash, tournaments, and sit and go games. This includes mixed games, such as Omaha and Razz, which are almost non-existence live.

However, when playing live you get player interaction, which cannot be replicated online. It’s likely going to be a nicer atmosphere to play in and often the games are weaker at the respected stakes.
